Niagara Falls comprises three separate waterfalls: the Horseshoe Falls (Canada), the American Falls and the smaller, adjacent Bridal Veil Falls. The Falls formed after the receding of the glaciers of the most recent Ice Age, as water from the newly formed Great Lakes carved a path through the Niagara Escarpment enroute to the Atlantic Ocean. While not exceptionally high, Niagara Falls is very wide. With more than six million cubic feet of water falling over the crestline every minute in high flow, and almost four million cubic feet on average, it is the most powerful waterfall in North America. Niagara Falls is not renowned only for its beauty. The Falls are a valuable source of hydroelectric power for both Ontario and New York.
IMAX – ‘NIAGARA: MIRACLES, MYTHS AND MAGIC’
‘Miracles, Myths and Magic’ is the most spectacular IMAX adventure of all. The IMAX camera dives without fear into the swirling aquamarine eddies below the breathtaking and perilous 150 foot Niagara Falls. Learn the 12,000 year history of the majestic falls and experience the death-defying stunts performed by daredevils who challenged the mighty water's fury, such as the 63 year-old schoolteacher who went over the falls in a barrel and the tightrope walker who hovered over its crests. No trip to Niagara Falls is complete until you have seen this IMAX classic.
JOURNEY BEHIND THE FALLS
At Journey Behind the Falls you will experience the awesome spectacle of 1/5 of the world’s fresh water crashing down 13 stories to the lower Niagara River. Every second over 2,800 cubic meters of water thunders over the rim at 40 MPH. Your Journey Behind the Falls visit will take approximately 45-minutes. In the spring and summer month’s students receive a free souvenir biodegradable rain poncho as protection from the mist and spray of the Falls. Elevators descend 150 feet through bedrock to tunnels leading to the Upper and Lower Observation Decks at the foot of the Falls, and to the Cataract Portal and the Great Falls Portal which is 1/3 of the way behind the massive sheet of water.
MAID OF THE MIST
Experience the falls first-hand via the Maid of the Mist. The boat starts off at a calm part of the Niagara River, near the Rainbow Bridge, and takes students past the American and Bridal Veil Falls, then into the dense mist of spray inside the curve of the Horseshoe Falls. The tour is available starting from either the Canadian or United States side of the river, returning to the starting point in each case.
NIAGARA PARKS BOTANICAL GARDENS
Located on the scenic Niagara Parkway, the Niagara Parks Botanical Gardens is the unique outdoor classroom for students attending the Niagara Parks School of Horticulture. Established in 1936, students can enjoy 99-acres of beautifully maintained gardens, including perennials, rhododendrons, azaleas, a formal parterre garden, shade, herb and vegetable plantings as well as the world famous rose garden featuring over 2,400 roses. Footpaths wind past the Butterfly Conservatory and butterfly garden, ponds and an arboretum that contains one of Canada’s finest collections of ornamental trees and shrubs. The Niagara Parks Botanical Gardens are truly an enriching experience for all ages.
SKYLON TOWER OBSERVATION DECK
The indoor/outdoor Observatory, the highest vantage point in Niagara, is located on the third floor of the Skylon Tower Dome. On a clear day students can see close to 8,000 square miles of Canada and the United States, including the skylines of Toronto, Ontario and Buffalo, New York. At night, year-round, you can enjoy the color light display of the Falls and cities of Niagara Falls, Canada and Niagara Falls, New York. A souvenir shop is located on the indoor section of the observatory.
WHIRLPOOL AERO CAR
The aero car was designed by a Spanish engineer, Leonardo Torres Quevedo, and has been in operation since 1916. The cable car is suspended from six sturdy cables and offers a wonderful view of the Niagara Whirlpool which is formed at the end of the rapids where the gorge turns abruptly counterclockwise and the river escapes through the narrowest channel in the gorge. Students will look eye to eye with birds soaring effortlessly on thermal updrafts rising from the gorge. Suspended in space you share their point of view.
WHITE WATER WALK
At White Water Walk students will ride an elevator down to the base of the falls. Stroll along a boardwalk (1,006 feet) at the very edge of one of the world's wildest stretches of white water. Marvel at the relentless power and beauty of nature and see how a millennia of rushing water created the deep and narrow Great Gorge (the water travels at different speeds along the length of the Niagara River – south of the Falls where the river is wide and slow; the maximum speed is about 25 MPH. Trillions of gallons of water are forced into this accelerating trough. The sight will take your breath away.
