Toledo, Ohio (One-Day Tour)
This tour can be combined with Lake Erie Islands / Sandusky travel packages
Toledo is on the western end of Lake Erie and is the county seat of Lucas County. Toledo is the fourth largest city in the state and is known as the ‘Glass City’ because of its long history of innovation in all aspects of the glass industry: windows, bottles, windshields, construction materials and glass art, of which the Toledo Museum of Art has a large collection. Toledo is also known for industrial manufacturing, although these industries have declined considerably in past decades. Automotive glass supplier Libbey Owens Ford has long been a staple of Toledo's economy.

MANSION VIEW INN
Located in the historic district of Toledo's Old West End, this magnificent 10,000 square foot mansion was designed by Edward O. Fallis for Charles Reynolds in 1887 (Reynolds was a prominent banker and grain merchant in the Toledo area). It is graced with terra cotta ridge caps, corked brick, feathered slate and a griffin on the roof. Today, the Mansion View Inn boasts some of the finest architecture found anywhere and holds an award for its historical value and quality of preservation and is listed on the National Historic Register. On site workmen spent nearly two years fashioning this spectacular estate. Students will marvel at the beauty of this historic mansion and will enjoy the hospitality too. In addition to a guided house tour, students can enjoy a delicious catered lunch.
R.A. STRANAHAN ARBORETUM
The University of Toledo R.A. Stranahan Arboretum has a full array of micro-environments within its 47-acres. Besides the outstanding collection of rare and interesting trees from all over the world, the Arboretum also has a restored prairie, a wetland area, a pond, a ravine and new and old growth forest areas. The entire facility is located within the Oak Openings Sand Dune region. The Arboretum allows students to learn about the complexities of life in the natural world. Enjoy a boxed lunch and self-exploration of the Arboretum.
TOLEDO MUSEUM OF ART
There are more than 30,000 works of art in the collection of the Toledo Museum of Art – this includes items such as prints and drawings that are on display on a rotating basis. There are several thousand works of art on permanent display in about 35 galleries. The collection of the Toledo Museum of Art is generally considered to be among the finest in the United States. Students will find world-famous works of art in nearly every gallery. The Museum continues to grow in its facilities, its collection and its relations with the Toledo community. A series of renovations to the interior of the original building from 1977 to 1992 was followed by the completion of the Center for the Visual Arts, designed by Frank Gehry. This building houses the Museum's Library and the Art Department of the University of Toledo. Students can enjoy a guided docent tour of the Museum or self-exploration.
TOLEDO ZOO
It was a largely unnoticed gesture nearly a century ago – the donation of a single woodchuck to the City of Toledo's Parks Board. Little did anyone realize at the time that an institution would emerge that would become one of Toledo's most beloved and valuable treasures. With this single gift the Toledo Zoological Gardens was started in 1900 and over the years has served as an enduring tradition for families and a source of pride for the entire community. From its rather ordinary beginnings the Toledo Zoo has become an extraordinary success. Nationally recognized as one of the most comprehensive zoological institutions in the nation, the Toledo Zoo now serves as the top tourist attraction in the area and is the number one reason student’s visit Toledo – the Zoo is highly regarded for its contribution to both the local economy and quality of life for the Toledo community.
WILLIS B. BOYER MUSEUM SHIP
In the shadow of the Toledo skyline a splash of history awaits students aboard the museum ship S.S. Willis B. Boyer. Upon her launching in 1911, the S.S. Willis B. Boyer was proclaimed as ‘the world’s largest bulk freighter.’ Built at the Great Lakes Engineering Works of Ecorse, Michigan, the Boyer was unsurpassed in both size and elegance, and established herself as a multiple cargo carrier, hauling both iron ore, coal and rye cargoes. Retired in 1980 and opened as a museum in 1987, the S.S. Willis B. Boyer serves as a floating testament to Toledo’s rich maritime heritage. Authentic restoration allows students to witness the proud lifestyle experienced by centuries of Great Lakes sailors. Come experience the ‘Golden Age’ of Great Lakes shipping aboard the largest museum ship on the inland seas.
