Behind Locked Gates / Off the Beaten Path

Discovery Tours specializes in individual and group travel. Discovery Tours offers school / student groups, churches, reunion activities, senior citizen groups and adults various vacation getaways. Choose from a variety of tours that offer transportation by motor coach, train, barge, airplane or ship.


BEHIND LOCKED GATES / OFF THE BEATEN PATH
(one day naturalist expeditions)
Fee: $49 per person / includes transportation,
driver, and professional naturalist guide
(fee does not include lunch or gratuities)

Join our professional naturalist as we discover some of the amazing natural wonders, events and phenomena of the region.  We will visit preserves that may be closed to the public and/or are seldom visited.  We will also explore sites that feature special short-term natural events.  Destinations include preserves and programs of the Nature Conservancy, the Cleveland Museum of Natural History, the Black Swamp Bird Observatory, the Holden Arboretum, private estates and more.  These are small group all weather programs that may involve walking on unimproved trails that may at times be hilly and muddy.  Bring binoculars for wildlife watching.  Transportation is provided or you can drive yourself. Lunch will be on your own.  Unless otherwise stated, all programs begin at 7:30 AM and end at 4:30 PM.

February 27, 2009 / Eagles, Eagles, Eagles - Find up to 60 bald eagles along Sandusky Bay and visit the natural springs at Castalia that host a great variety of waterfowl.

March 27, 2009 / Loons, Loons, Loons - Participate in a search for swans, loons, eagles and view the thousands of waterfowl that gather at Pymatuning Lake and Mosquito Lake.

April 24, 2009 / Knee Deep in Trilliums and Dances with Cranes - Take a slow slow walk through one of the most spectacular displays of wildflowers in Ohio and then visit an easy to see bird refuge at Sandy Ridge with nesting sandhill cranes and bald eagles.

May 8, 2009 / A Bird in the Hand and a Bird in the Bush - Visit the restricted bird banding facilities of the Black Swamp Bird Observatory and see birds very up close in the hands of the bander.  Also, enjoy the world famous migrant trap at Magee Marsh and wildlife watching at the Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge.

May 22, 2009 / The Lost Colony and the Secret Garden - Take a walk through one of the most unusual landscapes in Ohio complete with a lost colony of wild lupines protected by the Cleveland Museum of Natural History.  Later visit the spectacular rhododendron research gardens of the Holden Arboretum, an area that is closed to the public.

June 26, 2009 / BOG, a History Book With a Flexible Cove - We will walk the boardwalks and literally probe the natural history of Kent Bog and the Herrick Fen preserves and later explore the extensive wetland at Tinkers Creek Nature Preserve.

July 24, 2009 / The Other Side of the Mountain and the School in the Woods - We have permission to trespass on one the largest private estates and nature preserves in the state near the Holden Arboretum.  Later we will visit a very exciting new natural science education facility in the woods that is usually reserved for school use only.

August 28, 2009 / Summer Blues and Prairie Docs - Discover the fascinating Oak Openings region near Toledo, home the globally rare Karner Blue butterfly and a host of unusual beautiful prairie plants.  We will visit the internationally famous Kitty Todd Preserve of the Nature Conservancy and other sandland wonders of this prehistoric lakeshore region.

September 25, 2009 / Kelleys Island; the Glacial Grooves, the Alvar, and the Raptors - Explore one of Lake Erie’s most exciting natural areas.  Migrating hawks, rare plants, and world-class geologic formations are easy to see.

October 23, 2009 / Valley of the Giants and an Esker Walk - At the Hiram College Forest, walk the winding trails among the 300-year-old trees that tower above the forest floor.  Later explore one of Ohio rarest landforms, an esker that winds along the Cuyahoga River in a state nature preserve.
